What is cement bonded particle board? ›

Cement Bonded Particle Board is made from a mixture of wood particles and cement. Cement board adds impact resistance and strength to the wall surface. It is not actually waterproof, but it is highly resistant to absorbing moisture and has excellent drying properties.

Density and weight of the board

The density of CSP is 1000 kg/m3, which is less than the density of most of the cement-based materials. A board measuring 3200x1200x10 mm weights about 45 kilos.

Fibres, water and then cement are thoroughly mixed, with the mix typically made with fibres amounting about 70% of the volume; with the ratio by weight: cement 60%, wood 20%, water 20%.

One major disadvantage of cement board is the weight per square foot. It is approximately twice that of gypsum board, making handling by one person difficult. Cutting of cement board must also be done with carbide-tipped tools and saw blades. Due to its hardness, pre-drilling of fasteners is often recommended.

Floors: A 1/4-inch minimum thickness is needed, but thicker panels are also fine. Walls: Use 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch-thick cement board, not 1/4-inch. The extra thickness is needed when spanning the studs and it provides a solid base for the tile.

TWO COATS.

Just make sure you let the first coat dry before applying the second one. Otherwise you'll have a hard time spreading the second coat on smoothly. The most common mis- take is joining the two pieces together before the second coat has dried. Check the contact cement by feel.

For most interior applications, Durock® Brand Cement Board Panels are not affected by water and do not need to be waterproofed. Durock® is water durable but not waterproof. If you're looking for added protection to water sensitive material behind the Durock®, you may consider adding a waterproofing membrane.

If you're using galvanized nails, a general 1 ½‑inch galvanized nail should hold the concrete board firmly in place. Make sure the screw head is slightly indented into the cement board. You ideally want it flush with the surface.

Fiber cement planks are an inexpensive option at $0.70 to $8 per square foot. On average, that's equal to $7 to $50 each. You can find these at most home improvement stores. You'll spend less to purchase planks, but more to install them as they take much longer to install than panels.

Regular drywall is not appropriate either. Many professional installers even recommend against using water- or mold-resistant drywall in high-moisture areas. In sharp contrast, cement backer board does not rot, warp, grow mold, or deteriorate when subjected to water.

Concrete board isn't generally a term used at all. But it can be used in place of cement backer board if the board contains all of the ingredients used in concrete. But the term cement board, on the other hand, always works.

Glass Mat Gypsum

DensShield is one common brand. It is easier to cut than cement board, it is mold resistant, and it has a built-in moisture barrier. Dean, our tile consultant, says glass mat backer board is his first choice due to the ease of installation, cost, and because his workers like it.

Different brands will have different expectations. For example, some companies say their fibre cement cladding will last for over 100 years if installed and maintained properly. Others say their product will last between 50 and 60 years. Fibre cement cladding is known for its durability.

Can I just screw down cement board? ›

Secure Backer Board with Screws

Drill cement board screws through the backer board sheets every 6 to 8 inches. Position the screws at least 1/2-inch, but no more than 2 inches, from the edge of the sheet. Drive the screws in so that the heads are slightly below the surface of the backer board sheet.

What thickness of backer board should I use? Most commonly, cement board underlayment comes in two sizes: 1/4 and 1/2 inch. While either size can be used on a floor the 1/2 inch is the only size recommended for walls. Further, 1/4 inch typically works best for most flooring transitions.

The maximum weight Durock Cement Board can support is 15 pounds per square foot. This includes the weight of the thinset mortar as well as the thin brick.
